Enter the palatable world of Elizabeth Willing, as she discusses the food-based themes for her new show Empty Inside. Using food as the subject and medium in her works, the artist continues to materially explore the way that food functions as a site of collective experience. Drawing a connection between processed snack food and packaging materials, the show considers the manufacturing, transportation and consumption of products that are devoid of use-value, beyond their function as commodities. The performative methods of production, including the use of saliva as an adhesive in sculptures, imbue these mass-produced foods with a personal, lived experience.
Elizabeth is a Brisbane artist who has exhibited extensively in Australia and internationally. She is currently undertaking a Master of Fine Art at QUT.
